“Governing a big country is like baking pizza.”
After the COVID-19 pandemic, the global economy has fallen into a certain degree of recession. Young people in mainland China are forced to confront heavy pressures in everyday life: fewer jobs, heavier workloads, class rigidity, empty promises of a “bright future,” endless “involution,” and relentless wolf-style corporate culture.
In March and April 2024, I came to Jingdezhen for an artist residency. Jingdezhen, once a legendary porcelain capital, has in recent years become a new internet hotspot, partly because it has absorbed many young people who choose “lying flat” as a quiet form of resistance to “involution.” Yet the frantic commercialization that followed has turned everything into a race, and the city that was once an art capital has gradually lost some of its spirit and creativity. That was disappointing to me, because this is my hometown.
I shaped clay into the appearance of food because, historically, “Goddess of Mercy/Guan Yin soil (kaolin clay) ” , the very material used in ceramics, it was once eaten to stave off hunger during famine. The pizza form, meanwhile, points to unequal distribution of wealth and to the workplace habit of “painting cakes” — promising people something delicious that never arrives. For a young person just entering society, facing all this unfairness and difficulty, what breaks is not only the ideal, but also innocence. And yes, I am really hurt.
